Land Purchase for Ricord’s Iguana 2010
The IIF has recently purchased 20 hectares (49 acres) of land in Pedernales, Dominican Republic. This land, known as Fonda de la Tierra, contains a very important nesting population of the Critically Endangered Ricord’s Iguana (Cyclura ricordii). The last census of this area showed evidence of 140 active nests. The protection of this land will be instrumental in conserving this species.
Currently Masani Accimé and Ernst Rupp are also working on creating a municipally-protected area in Anse-à-Pitres in Haiti where the last known population of Ricord’s Iguana in Haiti is found. The Foundation is excited to inform you about our progress with this species and we will post updates as we get them! Thank you all for supporting iguana conservation!
